Profile

This former public bath (note how “MEN” and “WOMEN” are etched above the two entrances) had been largely abandoned since the seventies when computer consultant turned arts patron Eric Richmond reopened it as a multipurpose arts venue in 2002. Today, the main space—a 3,600-square-foot brick-lined theater with cavernous ceilings, folding chairs on risers, and a worm’s-eye view of the tiny upstairs café—hosts everything fringy, from indie film festivals to cabaret shows to circus arts acts. The Lyceum also hosts events off-site, such as reenactments of abolitionist sermons, in Sunset Park’s historic Green-Wood Cemetery. A small on-site café offers coffee, beer, scones, and other light fare during performances, but also opens early on weekday mornings to catch commuters on their way to the Union St. subway station, outside its doors.

Cafe Hours

Mon.—Fri., 7 a.m.—7 p.m.; Sat.—Sun., 10 a.m.—6 p.m.
