Hidden on an unassuming, leafy street a few blocks north of Prospect Park, Bed and Breakfast Marisa offers comfortable accommodations in a Brooklyn brownstone-meets-quiet-country-home setting. Owner Billy Tashman and his Argentinean-born wife Marisa offer guests the choice of the garden-level apartment (a two-bedroom space with a living room, kitchen, private bathroom and a separate entrance) or one of the four guest rooms that share two common bathrooms on the upper level. Décor is simple, understated and soothingly homey, heavily favoring wooden furniture stained in rich, earthy hues. Visitors staying in the garden apartment have direct access to the spacious, if somewhat overgrown, backyard garden, home to two hammocks, a basketball hoop for the couple’s son, and a family of rabbits belonging to their daughter. Though he says it wasn’t always the safest spot in New York, Tashman—a longtime Brooklyn resident who at various times has been an NYC cab driver, public school teacher and a reporter for The Village Voice—insists his corner of Prospect Heights has cleaned up nicely in recent years.
ProsFriendly, unpretentious owners offer a relaxed, comfortable living space and backyard access in a neighborhood easily accessible to Manhattan by subway.
Cons
Shared bathrooms upstairs and limited kitchen facilities in one of the guest rooms; the north side of building gets street noise at busier times of the day.
Note
There is a two-night minimum stay.
