Profile
This charming, rubber-scented shop sells fully restored vintage bicycles from the 1950s to the 1990s, specializing in Schwinns and Raleighs dug from the attics and garages of the suburban Midwest. The store is a passion project for owner Chung Pai, a bike enthusiast whose previous endeavor was a short film titled Love on a Bicycle. The antithesis of hardcore cycling depots, this crowded shop draws a clientele of mostly amateur New York bikers who are drawn to the supply of curvy, outdated shapes, quirky touches (a handlebar bell reading “I Heart My Bike,” a seat emblazoned with the initial S), and cheery array of colors—not to mention free slurpies while you browse, tapped from a machine dubbed the “Slush Puppie.” Each bike is restored by a team of four on-site mechanics, with a selection ranging from $175 for 1980s and ‘90s-era Schwinns up through a mint condition Schwinn Breeze ($750) or an antique Bridgestone model from the 1930s ($1,000). Neon, glittered, and cruiser models are parked in neat rows surrounding an antique Dumont television set, vintage wicker purses, and old-school telephones and electric fans. Detachable metal bike baskets line the walls, and the display case near the Slush Puppie stocks horns, locks, and kitschy key chains.
Bike RentalsRent a vintage bike: $35 for 24 hours.

While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
